Disable the Chrome AddThis Extension

We spent 3 days investigating some of the performance issues reported recently on feedly on chrome. The result is in: The AddThis chrome extension makes loading feedly on Chrome very slow and delays the loading of feedly pages by 5 to 20 seconds, completely hanging the browser during that time.

The work around to this problem is simple: go to chrome://extensions and disable the AddThis extension.

We have sent an email to AddThis with the result of this research so hopefully they will take the time and fix this behavior: generating high CPU background behavior on every page without explicit user engagement is rogue behavior. Hopefully they will acknowledge and fix this.

Spread the word.

Have a great week end.

Update: Thanks to the AddThis team for the responsiveness. They have acknowledged the issue and are working on a fix. We will let you know as soon as the fix is out.

    1. Agreed. The read links colour keeps reverting back to the default grey even though it remembers my hex code.

        1. Chrome makes app icons turn grey when you loose internet connection.

Disconnect your internet and you will see most of your apps turn grey, the ones that keep colour can work offline.

Individual apps turning grey is a known chrome bug and has been for over a year. Its a low priority bug.

Try disconnecting your internet and reconnecting it to see if that helps.

  1. I wish this was the solution for me. I get the same hung browser, high CPU problem as well when using the Feedly site, but I’ve never used or heard of AddThis. I wonder if other extension are doing the same thing. I’m happy to provide info or troubleshooting logs or something if someone wants them.

  2. somehow it feels that the problem is with feedly because I started having problems with both chrome and firefox (I’m running the latest ubuntu.)

chrome still doesn’t work, without having installed AddThis. I have Disconnect and the block counter shoots up to hundreds when trying to load the page. But that’s not the problem because when I start an incognito window (where all extensions are turned off) I still get the same slowdowns and the site eventually doesn’t load.

with firefox I get slowdowns too but -unlike chrome- not to the point of not loading the site. I usually get the following error:

A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

    1. There is already version 17.2.230.
Did you try if you get errors with this new version?
Have you tried if you get errors with this new version?
I have no problem. Only in my Pro account, where I have many feeds and slower is going to mark as read and refresh the feeds ‘g+ a’.
I always see as solution by clicking on ‘All Older Than One Day’.
There are things that it take a little time, but I hope it the v18 is resolved this.
There is a trick: We can change font in the browser

  3. Feedly is not loading at all on my Chrome. It shows a message on the screen saying “Scheduled Maintenance Feedly will be back in less than 30 minutes” since Wednesday! I don’t have the AddThis extension neither I added any other extension on my laptop lately.

  4. Is there any news on this? I would like to be able to use the AddThis extension because I use it for Google+.

  5. Hmm, I don’t (and never did) use the “AddThis” extension, and Feedly still takes a very long time to load– over 20 seconds. This happens in Chrome on a Mac as well as in Firefox on Linux (work, no Chrome). I’m a big RSS fan, but this delay keeps me from paying to upgrade to premium Feedly.

  6. My feedly is gone! I can log in, but its an empty page. All of the blogs I follow have all disappeared! Anyone know what happened? Or I how I can recover them?

    Thank so you much! Christine
