Import an OPML File into Feedly

Feedly has now full OPML import. Please see http://blog.feedly.com/2013/07/03/the-fix-to-the-missing-feeds-issue-is-here/

          1. Well, you were supposed to upload it into Google Reader, which is already closed by now. Feedly is expected to have direct OPML import in the next version, AFAIK.

            1. I already imported one of my Google accounts into Feedly. Then I made changes in Feedly to clean up my feeds. Then I wanted to import a second Google account into the same Feedly. But since I already made changes in Feedly to my first account, I didn’t import the second into the first Google account, because I didn’t want to screw up the changes I did in Feedly.

            2. Gotta say…was going to sign up for Feedly but since they didn’t have OPML Import ready this morning i went with an alternative. I’m probably not the only one.

              1. Which other reader did you go with John? I’m too late to get my Google Reader feeds to come over to Feedly and can’t find anywhere to upload the OPML Import… :/

                  1. Yeah I am looking for an import now, I assumed I would be able import from the interface but I guess not

    1. Another happy user here. Importing my feeds was easy, and their revenue straem is selling an awesome RSS service to me, not selling my data. I appreciate that these days.(Also, open source from top to bottom, so I could host it myself if they went out of business. This is more interesting to geeks, less interesting to non-technical folk.)Bryan: might I suggest then, that this isn’t for you? Some of us find a standard for decentralized content syndication useful; you don’t, and that’s cool. Just, perhaps, consider that your use case isn’t a universal one.

  1. Completly agree with the previous comment. This is not very intuitive. The rational guess only leads to more confusion and frustrated efforts. It would be appreciated if, at least, Google Chrome allowed a simple XML to be viewed neatly with a basic standard feed reader similar to other well known search engine browser feed readers.

  2. Well I’m not a power user and I don’t know how to extract an OPML file. So…yeah. Extremely helpful.

  3. Don’t have Bloglines or Netvibes. Not sure what OPML file extraction even means. While I love the idea of Feedly, this seems overly complicated.

    1. I think Feedly TV is a great idea. Ever since I’ve started using Feedly I like to use RSS feeds on Hulu and embed the new udloaps right into Feedly, to bypass the hulu queue and have it ready for me right with the rest of my news whenever I want. This also can be done with most major networks that allow embedding of videos from their own site. The problems only being that I can’t navigate through the rest of my news while watching the embedded video, and if I resize the browser, it stops the video and starts it all over. If that was fixed, and maybe the ability to make some playlist, I would use feedly a TON for videos.

    2. Thanks Rob. Can you send me the link to the post or link to it here in thecomments? I’d like to read it. It’s riduiclous to say that RSS is too old .That argument doesn’t even make sense. The only way we should judge aspecific technology is in how well it solves the problem. We don’t callhammers old because theyve been around for thousands of years, do we? It’sstill the best thing for getting a nail into a wall.

  4. i’m just trying to import a webpage of mine , a fave , but everybody saying how great this is , but it’s got to be easier than this.

  5. If you are a power user and know what an OPML file is, here is a quick work around:

If you are not, this blog article is not for you.

  6. I’d like to use Feedly without any google dependencies – AND import the OPLM file from my desktop RSS reader. I’m happen to hack the xML and/or drop it someplace inside the android file system through shell commands.

    Possible?

      1. I bought a rotgstraiien for FlickrExport a few weeks go and I realised today that it’s a bit silly to have paid for FlickrExport and yet be using a free Flickr account.a0 So I’ve finally paid for a pro one today, however I didn’t upgrade the account I have been using because it isn’t included in public searches and tag pools, I occasionally upload screenshots to it and these are considered copyrighted material, if they notice they flag your account to not be made public.a0 So, i’ve setup a new account, a pro one for photo’s and I’ll use the free one for screenshots and dodgy things I guess. The Scobe or whatever he’s affectionately known has been praising some beta software by Microsoft, Codename Max (sounds way to much like Mac’s), I can’t for the life of me figure out what it is so I was intrigued to try it out.a0 It has a flashy interface which requires a good 3D card I think, so I have to boot into bootcamp for that.a0 So I booted into Vista to download Max and install it, and do you know what?a0 The Installer told me I need XP! OMG!a0 In fact, even better it told me to upgrade to XP.

    1. good question, feedly just worked before today for me, now i have to insert more than 1000 feeds because feedly is not working anymore with google acount import?????

  7. I’ve managed to export my feeds from Google Reader but it would be wonderful if I could upload them into Feedly. I’m currently adding a feed at a time by copying & pasting from the raw OPML file.

For those who aren’t experts, Google Reader exports all your data into a zipped file named -takeout.zip. If you save this file somewhere (eg in your downloads folder) then open the zip file and extract the file called subscriptions.xml and save that file somewhere (eg to your desktop). Clicking on the xml file it opens it in a browser page and you will be able to see all your feeds listed.

To actually get the feed to appear as a Feedly feed (rather than a Google Reader feed) you need to copy & paste the URL for the feed. Eg:

You need to copy this bit: http://www.davidlebovitz.com/feed/ (ie the second URL) and paste that in the add website box, let Feedly find the feed and then click on the + symbol to add it to your Feedly feed.

Good luck! & Please, Feedly, can you develop a xml import tool stat! Thx!

    1. yeah…I need to copy every single link to feedly.

Arghh Google…can you develop a xml import toll.

  8. Guys. I can tell the instruction seems difficult for a lot of you, but try considering these 3 things to understand it:
    1. If you are migrating from probably-closing Google Reader — you don’t need to export/import anything. This is for those people who used other RSS-Readers, who are usually more advanced users and know what OPML is. All you need to do is “Login” and Feedly will automatically link to your Google account and get all the feeds from your Google Reader.
    2. There is still no apparent way to import OPML directly into Feedly without using Google Reader. If you’re completely new to RSS or just Google Reader — you need to register a Google account if you don’t have one, then go to http://google.com/reader and there you will find cog-shaped button for preferences under which you’ll see Import/Export tab.
    3. Most likely Feedly will get all the independent features any RSS-reader out there should have after the death of Google Reader gets officially confirmed, but since the petition at http://change.org/petitions/google-keep-google-reader-running is gathering more and more votes — Google might decide to give Google Reader another chance. If it happens — Feedly will probably just remain a pretty front-end for Google Reader.

  9. If you want to have a success dropshipping wholesale business, the wholesale costs is very vital. And you can sell the products at a premium prices to customers. Based on the brand and the style of sunglasses, the profit have a large difference, from 10%-40% off the retail price. So this point you must pay more attention on choosing the wholesale dropshipping suppliers. Some retailers if best done can make hundreds of dollars with pure profit in some months especially in the hot season the profit is much larger. For instance, the retail price is $25 for the general style. But if you may purchase the sunglasses at a wholesale price such like $15 per unit, selling 30 pairs at the retail price of $25 can get $300. oakley fast jacket matte black and white sunglasses http://www.sunglasses-soaho.org/oakley-fast-jacket-matte-black-and-white-sunglasses-p-141.html

  10. We need the ability to export to opml as well. I have people that want to use my feeds to start their feedly account. Can’t do that without an export function.

    1. Where are data being saved? After July 1st, Google Reader will be closed so I guess Feedly could not use our RSS feeds stored on our Google Reader account. I don’t want them to disappear. So are our feeds being saved on Feedly servers with the silent Google Reader import function?
      Thanksfor your answer.

    2. The project dnolevpmeet slowed down recently, but it’s still active. I’m planning for the next release to coincide with Ubuntu 12.04, and will likely follow their LTS cycle from here on out. The major changes to Gnome and significant changes to Xfce in 11.04, combined with writing a new launcher panel for Qimo, just ended up being more work than I had time for.

  11. seriously feedly is awesome but why is it so buggy?……. i can’t even log in and haven’t been able to log in via safari for the past week

  12. So I migrated from Reader about a month ago but since then I tried another RSS service for awhile and added a bunch of feeds to it. I wanted to come back to Feedly so I exported an OPML from that service, imported it into Reader, and logged into Feedly. But Feedly won’t update my feeds, even though Google Reader has all the new feeds in it from the OPML file. Is there a way to reset my Reader migration so it’ll wipe all those feeds and import new?

    1. So I fixed this problem by just logging into a different Google account (I have another one for other purposes) importing the OPML file into that account, and then migrating my Feedly from that account. Not an elegant solution and now I’m kind of stuck on a secondary account but it works and I can start using Feedly without having to manually update all my subscriptions.

Anyone who’s concerned about doing this before July 1st will have to create a new Google account.

  13. So i back-up my links from google reader with Take out and it creates a file named subscriptions.xml witch can be imported too (step 4), only that after logging into Feedly it doesnt import enything from Google. And i wonder why we dont have the option to import the xml file directly from the Feedly page? Plus, every time i want to login into Feedly is asking for Google acces over and over again.

  14. Muy mal. Ahora que ha cerrado google Reader. ¿Como se importan las RSS aun teniendo el fichero XML disponible?. Desde feedly no es posible. !!Una opción de importar XML ya, por favor!!

  15. Since Google Readers is now closed, how can I import my subscriptions.xml from Google Takeout? I moved Google Accounts this weekend and my subscription (although imported into the new Google account) didn’t make into the new Feedly account.

  16. Hi, same as Fred Janssen, i’ve suscribed and nothing was imported. I have the OPML file, but what to do with it ?

  17. I had all my feeds moved over a month ago and this morning they are all gone. Now how do I import them? According to your directions I have to import them to Google reader. Huh? I want to import them into Feedly.

  18. Like a few others, I had no problems IMPORTING my opml file which I had saved before. However, while the interface on Feedly is great, I want to be able to save (ie backup) my opml file and there is no obvious way to do this.

If there isn’t going to be an EXPORT function SOON, then it’ll be goodbye Feedly :(

  19. Are you planning to develop stand alone OPML import since Google Reader has been shut down? When?

  20. import from reader does not work — i have nothing.
i was able to get data via takeout — but don’t see how to get it into feedly…

  21. Feedly can’t be bothered to allow us to import OPML, so now millions of people getting kicked off will go elsewhere. Goodbye,

  22. ‘The Old Reader’ has this feature. Although it’s now with an import waiting queue of 1800-ish users. Good news is it’s moving really fast.

  23. now Google Reader has stopped, how can we import OPML into Feedly. Is there a solution? If not Feedly wil only be interesting for newcomers.

  24. I had migrated my google reader in spring like I was supposed to. Today they are all gone. My feedly is empty :/ I had imported to bloglovin just in case things didn’t go well yesterday. Did it override? How can I move them back to feedly?

    1. The interface is quite stinnung, beautiful even. But as a RSS reader, Max leaves much to be desired. No import of OMPL files and the inability to read whole posts. I would also like just a couple of options as to how to read the downloaded posts (2 or 3 pane, for instance). I would say that it’s beauty is only skin deep, but with the hude download file (and I realize much of it is the underlying framework), even this is not true. As eye candy, Max is stinnung, as a functional RSS reader it ultimately leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

    1. The options to import into feedly are all gone. According to what I have looked into they don’t have a option for importing a XML or OPML file with out the use of google reader. Seeing how that is down the only way to add to there system is one by one. Personally I would rather try something else before wasting more time on this.

    2. The old fonts were a lot better. Not neascesrily because the new fonts render badly, but the condensed style of the headings make everything look cramped.I would like to see Feedly’s layout adapt better to big screen sizes. When i open Feedly fullscreen on my computer the articles barely fill 50% of the screen width.

  25. Great job Feedly…NOT. You were the most hyped RSS feed source since Google announced they would close and you screwed the pooch. When I first heard about feedly I opened an account and magically all of my Google RSS feeds migrated properly.

Then on July 1st Google closed the reader and all of my feeds at Feedly disappeared too. Great job seriously. And to top it off, no way to import my saved Google data. I’m looking for an alternative.

  26. Finally Feedly add option “Import OPML” file you can find it in bottom left near preference button.

    1. I don’t see a prefs button anywhere — the upper left button offers “logout”, the upper right button offers “search”. That’s it. I’m on an ASUS Transformer tablet. Can anyone guide?

      1. Ok, if you login to cloud.feedly.com (and make it stop redirecting to the “get our app” page), there is a “prefs” icon with three bars in the upper left. Click that and you should see an import link.

    2. And for some reason they dislbaed installation on Vista RC1 and Windows Server 2003. Will Microsoft ever let me think and be cautious by myself? I am a software developers, I use Windows Server 2003 as my primary operating system for convenience. On my second machine I have Vista RC1, to learn it and try some development with new toys. I had to install Max in virtual machine, even though it could easily run on my primary box.

  27. To help anyone that finds this same issue. I exported multiple google reader accounts into new feedly accounts but now wanted to merge them all into a single feedly account. You can export OPML files from feedly and then there is the new option to import. Problem is it doesn’t work but if you watch carefully you get a hint why. It says “not version 1.0” or something like that, Therefore if you just edit your OPML file to say OPML V1.0 it will work.

  28. Well, you were supposed to upload it into Google Reader, which is already closed by now. Feedly is expected to have direct OPML import in the next version, AFAIK.

  29. Afraid import does not work for me either, surly there shuld be a note somewhere or take the import button away. That 20mins of my life wasted, wont be back!

  30. Had the same problem. But my opml file was imported after I copy/pasted the header from a feedly export (up to the body tag), then I had to add type=”rss” to every outline tags that was pointing to an rss/atom feed.
