Feedly for iPhone

[DRAFT. Please do NOT share until the 1.0 is feature complete and ready to launch in mid January. Thanks!]

We are excited to announce the release of Feedly for iPhone.

Feedly for iPhone gives you access to all your favorite sources on the go. It integrates seamlessly with both Feedly Desktop and Google Reader  and offers you a personalized news stream in a visually compelling format.

Like the feedly desktop, feedly for iphone combines powerful filtering with rich magazine-like layouts and offers a variety of sharing options.

Feedly for iphone was designed from the ground up to take advantage of the multi-touch capabilities of the iPhone, offering navigation shortcuts while maintaining a very simple user interface.

KEY FEATURES

Our Apple-ish video overview – to be re-aligned with final positioning  (click play and select 720p)

Simple. Every time you access your feedly, a personalized magazine is created based on the content of your favorite sources. All the configuration you have already applied to your feedly or Google Reader is automatically taken into account.

Smart.  A lot of the existing news readers focus on creating compelling visual experiences. Feedly goes beyond that by actively filtering and featuring the best/most important articles (based on your personal tastes and the votes of the community).

Fast. Thanks to advanced caching technics and real-time integration with Google Reader, the feedly experience remains fast even if you subscribe to hundreds of sources.

Anywhere. You can access your feedly from your iphone, from your browser or from Google Reader. You will always be exposed to a single consistent experience.

Four TIPS FOR OPTIMIZING THE FEEDLY MOBILE EXPERIENCE

New  to feedly? You should probably start with this quick visual tutorial.

Here are some additional tips on how to optimize the mobile experience:

  1. If you organize your sources in categories, the digest will filter the content from those categories and feature the best articles.
  2. You can change the order in which the categories are laid out in the digest iphone screen by re-ordering the categories in the feedly desktop navigation bar (using drag and drop)
  3. Marking some of your sources as must read will influence which articles are featured in the digest.
  4. When reading an article, you can select a snippet of text and use the more>tweet or more>email contextual menu to tweet or email that snippet of content

THE SWIPE VERSUS SCROLL DESIGN DECISION

We experimented with both a scroll-centric and a swipe-centric design. The swipe-centric approach feels different at first but fades away after a couple of days of usage – simple enough that you can perform it subconsciously – and has the benefit of allowing us to display different types of cards – like the desktop experience, we will be offering more views over time.

Touch Centric

Here is a help screen of all the gestures which are built-into the product. You can load that page in the app by tapping with two figures on the screen.

Try the shuffle. It allows you to quickly jump from one source to the next. It is fun!

Under the cover

Feedly for iPhone is the first application powered by “streets mobile”. We think it is a good showcase of the kind of mobile experiences HTML5+REST services will allow going forward.

The blueprint is very similar to the one of feedly desktop. It has just been adapted to the size and performance requirements of the phone. We will be talking more about this once Feedly for Android ships.

70 thoughts on “Feedly for iPhone”

  1. As to the instapaper/read it later-integration: what do you think about integrating those lists (saved items) As if they where rss-feeds? It would be a lot simplier to read them via feedly! (i bookmark lots of articles right from the webpage into readitlater. So later, i could read them via feedly along with my usual feeds. That would male a lot

  2. Sending rss feeds from feedly to instapaper/readitlater seems backwards, especially for diehard feedly users. Instead of integrating with instapaper and readitlater (or in addition to it),why not have your own bookmarking script that allows users to “save to feedly” from any webpage? You already have a “saved for later” feature in feedly. Why send content outside of feedly??? Maybe send webpages to your “saved for later” category or allow clipping with the ability to send to one of the other google reader categories.

Make feedly a one stop visual newsreading dynamo! RSS news plus saved webpage articles all in one spot. That would be ideal. Anyone else agree?

    1. Hi Stephen. Great feedback. Our goal for 5.0 is to try to do both: offer better integration with Instapaper and improve the feedly mini save for later feature so that we can capture the content of web pages so that you can read them later on the phone. More in early 2011. Happy holidays.

    2. It’s not backwards. Sending to Instapaper _currently_ is the only way (outside of the Google Reader ecosystem) to share marked/flagged/starred/tagged items in their own separate, accessible RSS feed. Say you’re a business and browsing your industry news in Feedly and come across a story that could be on your Intranet. All you had to do in classic Google Reader was tag it and the offshoot RSS feed of those tagged items could feed an Intranet. In the recent Google Reader iteration, you could get by with Instapaper to do a similar trick (albeit limited to 10 RSS items).

  3. Great Design!!!
But please add a option for automatic (!!!) cache. It think this could be more usefully than manuel marking articles for offline reading.
    Thanks for reading! :-)

    1. Offline cache +1 . Where I work there is no WiFi and carrier signal is about zero bar, plus if you have a low monthly data limit from your carrier, you want to grab content when you have WiFi so that can avoid expensive data overage fees. Think about it!

        1. another vote for offline. I do all my reading in the NYC subway and feedly ios is useless to me in its current form.

          1. yet another vote for offline. i, too, do all my reading underground (nyc subway) and cannot use feedly as it is currently.

            1. As one of the Google Reader power users that moved to Feedly, I also second this.
I use byline, which allows me to cache items (it has an option of caching only on WiFi, or with 3G).

Feedly would greatly benefit from a cache option; I am normally roaming on Europe, and 3G is quite expensive, so I prefer to cache on a wifi spot, read offline, and then when I am online back again, it will mark read items, sync it and cache for more.

              1. I am also a Google Reader “power user” looking for an alternative that has (or will soon have) caching and offline capabilities for the iPhone, Android and Windows Desktop versions. Please advise if (and when) you will be adding a cache option that will allow offline reading and syncing when one is back online.

                    1. Offline Cache – A Must! I lived my RSS life in Reeder for this very reason. My mistake for thinking Feedly already had this, but this is critical for my next Reader service.
                      Thx.

                1. Plz plz someone help me no smyhytpy but I’m 18 ben livin on my own a year more income, work whatever I need HELP please someone get to me at my email I juss got a blckberry storm so i can now repliy since I don’t have my own personnall computer?? .

  4. Hi, great app ! Very nice design. I’m subscribing and following Podcast with Feedly and would like to listen to them through Feedly. However, when the iPhone goes to sleep, broadcasting stops, which is not the case for other app that are not as user friendly as Feedly. Is there any option I forgot to activate ? Could you do something, so that the iPhone doesn’t turn off the broadcasting when going to sleep, please ?
    Thanks,
    Leo

    1. The game is FANTASTIC! Well, all right, not the game, BUT STORY! Great scot! The fifth part is great, i almost even cried when Doc and Marty… you know, i won’t speolir it for you. Go and read… i mean play this game. My score is 8, even thought, as a game BTTF:TG doesn’t deserve this, but great characters, great story and of course great sense of humor, that makes me want to go and replay this game, as i re-watch original trilogy every year.

  5. My iPhone Feedly app and my desktop one aren’t syncing. When I read an article on my web browser, it doesn’t show as read on my iPhone.

  6. Mark previous as read is an essential feature for keeping up with blogs that you haven’t read in awhile! I usually use Reeder on my iPhone instead of on my iPad just because the iPhone app supports “mark previous as read.” Try it, you’ll see!

  7. I am having a strange issue; I will read all of my articles on Feedly for iphone for example, I mark them read as I swipe, I get the green check arrow page All Done, etc … next time I launch Feedly (in this case 2 hrs later) either on Iphone or Apple laptop and click on ALL (which should show me all unread since the last time I marked everything read) it will include items from my feeds that were posted over 6 hrs ago, that I apparently haven’t seen – how and why is this happening?!

  8. The two drugs were thought to counteract each other’s negative side effects as well as increase each other’s primary effectiveness. No doubts, these pills are giving results to the people looking for slimmer bodies.

  9. When I woke in the morning the sun’s rays came streaming in through the flaps and right into my eyes. It’s a very good fruit in the morning and you don’t need those sweet pancakes and doughnuts as this is already rich in natural sugar.

  11. My feedly iphone app and my desktop feedly do not sync. I first signed up my desktop and got the app a few days later. I use google to login to both. Any suggestions? Thank you.

  12. I love this app… i’m only missing a feature that allows you to download the images within the feed so you can later use them in whatsapp or just because you want to store them in your phone. Taking screen shots will not cut it…

  13. I love the app, it is really great, but since the last update on 28.10. it dies not autorefresh at start like before. Please fix this, thank you very much!

  24. I love your iPhone app BUT I just updated it on iPhone 4 (ios 7.1.2) and it stopped working.
I have tried to revert to the old version but the ipa file I have on my iTunes is too old (2011) and also doesn’t work.
Can you please help me on this? I even tried other newsreaders but I really prefer my old Feedly app!
